Breaking News: Old Newspapers Are Better Than New Ones

November 15, 2017 ·

Old Newspapers Rolled Up
A couple of old newspapers rolled up. Excellent for decoration purposes. The frontmost newspaper has been oxidizing all the way since 1934.

Turns out. The older a newspaper become, the better they are. At least if one is to use it for decoration purposes. It was a late November night in the year twothousandseventeen that the ground breaking discovery was made. As the rain pounded against the windows, and a strong north wind rattled the glass, a fresh, off the press edition of "Mitt i Salem" flew through my mail slot. I held it up towards the waning light and scrutinized its surface for any sign of worthiness. It just was not to be compared with the rolled-up, different prints I had standing on my shelf—some of which dated all the way back to 1934. Read more.

It is always tucked away in the hamburger menu, so it… Read more.

The Old Newspaper WordPress Theme, Second Edition, is Released

March 3, 2017 ·

Ernest Hare Reading a Newspaper
Ernest Hare is reading a newspaper — an old one.

The Old Newspaper WordPress Theme grew from a few simple ideas. First of all: Old newspapers look good. Second: it should not be too cluttered, and focus on the reading experience—like an old newspaper. Thirdly: I simply wanted to make a WordPress theme. The theme is aiming to capture the feeling of holding a classic newspaper in your lap. Those large headlines, and that tightly fitted grid on the front page. Your room almost turns Black & White around you—(hopefully not). In this digital version of that paper, the article grid is responsive, refitting the news articles as your resize your browser. You may sit with a smartphone in your lap instead, but the feeling is still there. When your eyes have passed across the grid of articles, you select one that entices you, and enter into the reading experience. Read more.

We have taken it a step further to ensure this WordPress them is really smooth. Read more.

Newspaper Post Formats

January 5, 2017 ·

The Old Newspaper WordPress Theme features three different post formats in addition to the standard — four in all. Each to resemble a real life newspaper article or ad style. The Formats Post Format "Aside": Breaking News A classic example of a breaking news headline. This style has a thick in-your-face typeface for the titles, which is a really classic way of making a newspaper article pop. This style, of course, needed to be a part of the Old Newspaper WordPress Theme, and has been so from the very beginning. Only three days left!

There are only three days left until nothing happens at all. But if you need to highlight something. This post format, "Notice", is perfect. The name "Notice" comes from the classic newspaper term. The Merriam Webster Dictionary says a notice is "a written or printed announcement", with the example use of the word being, "Newspapers print notices of marriages and deaths." Once you click yourself into this post format, it looks the same as Breaking News, but in the front… Read more.

Alice in Wonderland

February 28, 2015 ·

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, 'and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice 'without pictures or conversations?' So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her. More holes cut in Wall

November 11, 1989 ·

Woman Waving Across the Berlin Wall
A woman waving across the Berlin wall.

East German workers early today punched through the Berlin Wall, lifting a section of concrete panel to create a 6-foot gap, making the first hole in the fortification that has divided East and West for nearly 30 years. Work was reported on many more new openings in the wall that divided the city for 28 years. East German guards immediately placed a flimsy red and white metal barrier in front of the opening at the Bernauer Strasse, effectively erecting a new temporary barrier. Read more.

The Moon Landing Proven to be a Hoax

July 24, 1969 ·

Moon Landing
The moon landing is apparently a hoax.

No. The only thing that  is proven is that false news stories are shared in social media too much. I ask you to take responsibility and not share or comment just anything that flows through your Facebook feed. Think through it. Maybe google the news title and ask yourself: "Is this logical?" However, don't be a cynical sceptic. Do believe something. Who knows if the moon landing actually was a hoax? Read more.

Perfect Newspaper Titles

January 4, 1949 ·

Old Newspaper titles are huge, and that is how they are supposed to be. In some situations, that may create some awkward word-breaks here and there. Here is how to control it in the unlikely event of an emergency. If you want to control where long words are hyphenated when they break, add the tag in the title, exactly where you want it to break. I have done this in the title about Huckleberry Finn. I broke it like Adven-ture, and Huckle-berry. Pull the browser on desktop to test. Read more.

The Titanic is sunk, with great loss of life

April 16, 1912 ·

The Titanic docked in Southampton
The White Star liner docked in Southampton.

The maiden voyage of the White Star liner Titanic, the largest ship ever launched, has ended in disaster. The Titanic started her trip from Southampton for New York on Wednesday. Late on Sunday night she struck an iceberg off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. By wireless telegraphy she sent out signals of distress, and several liners were near enough to catch and respond to the call. Conflicting news, alarming and reassuring, was current yesterday. Even after midnight it was said all the passengers were safe. All reports, of course, depended on wireless telegrams over great distances. Read more.
